WP # 5: Supporting Female Advancement in Complexity Application Areas
The same ideas as in the WP4 have guided us for defining the WP dedicated to female scientists. The dedication from the beginning of resources, expertise and management attention to this issue will avoid the danger of having the issue forgotten within the STREPs. Moreover, the leader of the program is one of the world prominent leaders in gender issues in the scientific field. WP5 will support financially travel to STREP actions, and support events that will help them to enroll in scientific programs such as the European Complexity PhD.

Objectives
Due to a broken career pattern and social constrains, female (in large) tend to choose working in scientifically established fields. Thus, in order to balance it we address talented young females which are capable of analysing situations in parallel tracks (as in Complexity Theory) and present them the challenge of interdisciplinary research. We highlight the advantage of joining a new discipline in the early development stages.
The goal is to attract female graduate students from related fields into studying Complexity, possibly within the framework of the various STREP projects (usually with 2 advisors from 2 different disciplines and 2 different countries), as well as ensuring that upon completing their PhD studies some will choose the path of academic career in the field and other will take leading positions in Industry, Banking, Governmental offices etc using the skills, techniques and algorithms that they acquired in their studies in order to attack complex problems in disordered systems.
Instruments
In the framework of the activities of WP7 special competitions are organized for the best interdisciplinary research initiatives within several domains (e.g. psychology, physics, biology etc) by the young female researchers.
Also initiatives for identifying outstanding candidates for joint Complexity PhD projects are organized.
Female researchers, who are already identified with the complexity perspective are invited to engage in collaborative research projects. This collaboration is to result in research papers. We support visits by female potential PhD students in research laboratories to initiate and facilitate collaborative ties especially in the context of STREP research.
